New Faces Hope For Repeat Result

The Miami team hoping to retain the NFL Flag Football World Championship is full of new faces as the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center team heads to Beijing, China for the 2005 tournament. Only wide receiver and dangerous rusher Alex Ciklik remains from the team that triumphed in Vancouver 12 months ago.

The team’s defensive standout is Evan Grabois, who witnessed the event from the sidelines in 2004 and is excited to now step on the field and contribute.

“It was fantastic to watch the tournament last year and to actually now be playing myself is a dream come true,” said the 14-year-old. “My brother was part of that winning team and I hope to match his success and again bring home gold for the United States.”

Grabois, whose father Mitch is the Team Manager is regarded as the MAR JCC’s fastest player and has lined up under head coach David Fried for three years. Such experience and familiarity with each other’s strengths proved a key in winning gold in Canada in 2004.

“I teach dedication, hard work, sportsmanship and teamwork, which has helped make this team successful,” said Fried. “It is an honor to again represent our country, especially in such a spectacular setting.”

Last year USA quarterback Steven O’Hayon won MVP honors and is followed under center in Beijing by Andrew Brodsky, a four-year member of the team. Having served as O’Hayon’s backup, he has waited patiently for his time in the spotlight to arrive.

Two players new to the MAR JCC are Jonathan Salk and Cameron Charme. Salk is an energetic and enthusiastic receiver, while Charme is the team’s tallest offensive weapon and also plays center.

“He has probably come the furthest in the shortest time in terms of becoming a dominant player,” said coach Fried. “He is very flexible and can play all positions.”

The team’s most versatile player is Josh Shaprio, who throws the ball well, is an accomplished receiver, a good runner, and stands out on defense. “He’s extremely tough,” added Fried.

The Miami team will prepare for the FFWC at a series of practices and will also visit Miami Dolphins training camp on Saturday, August 6 and throw the first pitch at a Florida Marlins game on Tuesday, August 9 as part of the NFL activities.
